When the Packers decided not to tender tight end Tom Crabtree as a restricted free agent earlier this week, they knew there was the possibility they could lose him.

That's exactly what happened late Friday night.

The popular backup tight end signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his marketing agent confirmed.

No contract details were available.

Earlier on Friday, a source said Crabtree had drawn interest from several teams, including the Packers, who were hoping to re-sign him.

Had they put a tender on him, even the lowest one for restricted free agents at $1.323 million, they would have had the right of first refusal and could have matched any offer Crabtree received.

But when they decided not to tender him, Crabtree was free to sign with any team.
