Georgia OLB Jones not called for medical re-check

Apr. 5, 2013

The medical concerns about one of the top pass-rushing prospects in this year’s draft appear to have diminished this offseason.

Jarvis Jones, an outside linebacker from Georgia who led FBS schools in sacks, has not been asked to attend the NFL scouting combine’s medical re-check in Indianapolis this weekend, according to a report by ProFootballTalk.com.

Jones transferred to Georgia after he failed a physical at USC early in his college career because of spinal stenosis. He played two seasons at Georgia without incident.

Jones is one of the top prospects as a 3-4 outside linebacker in this draft, but concerns about his neck going into the offseason raised the possibility that he could be available when the Packers select at No. 26 overall. Some NFL teams still might lower his draft grade or flag him as a medical reject grade, depending on their medical staff’s evaluation, but not having to go for the medical re-check suggests Jones has cleared the medical hurdle with most teams. So the chances of him being among the pool of players from which the Packers will choose appears to have diminished.

Team's bigger concern probably is that he ran a 4.92-second 40-yard dash this offseason. That’s shockingly slow for a player who had 44 sacks over the last two seasons and raises concerns about his ability to run with backs and tight ends in pass coverage as a 3-4 outside linebacker. But that exceptional production while playing in the best conference (the Southeastern) in college football still means he probably will get drafted in the middle third of the first round.
