None taken in supplemental draft

Jul. 11, 2013

All 32 NFL teams passed on the six eligible players in Thursday’s supplemental draft, including the Packers who haven’t made a selection in 15 years.

The only one of the six the Packers reportedly had interest in was South Alabama’s Damond Smith, a 5-foot-11 cornerback who brings some baggage after leaving Western Michigan on bad terms and then being suspended from USA for violating team rules.

Some reports said the Packers tried to bring Smith in on a tryout basis before their rookie orientation in May, but the NFL ruled he was ineligible. With one spot remaining on the 90-man roster, they’re free to sign him now without having to surrender a 2014 draft choice had they bid on him during Thursday’s supplemental draft.

The Packers have made four supplemental selections since they began drafting players who hadn’t previously declared in 1977. The last time the Packers did so was in 1998 when Ron Wolf surrendered a second-round pick in the 1999 draft to secure Navy tackle Mike Wahle, who went on to play seven seasons in Green Bay. Walhe had lost his senior eligibility at Navy due to a positive test for steroids.

It was the first time since 2008 no players were selected.
