Williams deal
Corey Williams didn't get a deal quite as good as Oakland defensive tackle Tommy Kelly but still struck a big pay day with his impending trade from the Green Bay Packers to Cleveland Browns.
Kelly, who is coming off a torn anterior-cruciate ligament, received $18 million in guaranteed money as part of his $50 million, seven-year contract that surprised league insiders as extravagant for a player coming off a serious injury.
According to Profootballtalk.com, Williams received $16.3 million in guaranteed money as part of six-year deal worth $38.6 million.
The Packers, in return, will get the Browns' second-round draft pick, which is pick No. 56 overall. That will give them picks No. 56 plus their own No. 60 selection, which could give them ammunition to trade one of them to move up a few spots from No. 30 in the first round if there's a player General Manager Ted Thompson especially likes. Packaging one of those No. 2 picks with No. 30 overall could move the Packers into the middle of the first round.
The trade has not yet been announced, so Williams' representatives and the Browns probably are putting the finishing touches on the deal.

this is a good trade, although they should've received a 2nd and 4th or 5th round pick as well.

i don't get it. I'm not complaining, as I think we have higher needs at other positions and an extra draft pick will help with that. I just don't get it. If Corey Williams was supposedly one of the most coveted DTs on the free agent market, why did we only get a second round pick?

Corey Williams was a 6th round draft pick in 2004. He hasn't been a full time starter like he will be for the Browns. He was projected to get a third round pick but instead got a 2nd rounder. That's a very excellent value for the Packers. Provided Jolly heals to 100%, Harrell makes decent improvement, and Cole improves a bit, this will have been a decent trade.

His contract...6 years, 36 million, was something the Packers could've afforded. That is a bargain compared to some of the other DT contracts that have been signed the last few days. Perhaps the Pack really like what they see in Harrell.

I think we will be regretting this decision in years to come. Solid to very good defensive linemen are very hard to come by and a team ought to have its team stocked full of them. Assuming that Harrell makes improvement is a big assumption as is assuming that Jolly will heal. If they both reach their potential we will do well. But with Williams on board our d-line would be something to contend with for years to come even with potential injuries.

Let me get this straight. We are getting rid one of our defensive tackles with tremendous potential and abilities. Yet, we are keeping our 1st round defensive tackle who was inconsistent and very average in 2007 when he was healthy enough to play. Harrel has been a bust in 2007 and will be a bust in 2008, while we are getting rid of Williams for a crap shot of geting a quality player in the draft. As a previous person said, we will be regretting this decision.
