Report: Gray will sign with Texans
Free-agent quarterback Quinn Gray plans to sign a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle. (UPDATE: The Chronicle reports it is a done deal.)
Gray has visited with the Packers and would seem to have a better chance at being the No. 2 guy here than in Houston, which has Matt Schaub and Sage Rosenfels. The Texans reportedly have been shopping Rosenfels for a second-round pick, though, meaning Gray could end up being the No. 2 in Houston before training camp.
The reported $645,000 deal includes a $40,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $605,000 -- the minimum for a player with four to six years experience like Gray -- so if there were a holdup with the Packers, it probably isn't money.
The Packers are in the market for a backup quarterback after Brett Favre's retirement left Aaron Rodgers as the only veteran signal-caller on the roster. They also have brought in Gus Frerotte, who was released by St. Louis and has visited with one of his former teams, the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings reportedly offered a third-round pick for Rosenfels and were turned down.

Part of me wants to criticize TT for not signing this guy, as we could have gotten him for the minimum and I think he has the most upside of any of the QBs out there. But time and time again TT has come to a solution that works so I'll keep my mouth shut and let him do his job, and I should probably get back to mine right now anyways.

I agree with Buck, I thought Gray was a great choice for a #2 - some reasonable experience as well as some potential.
But, my guess is TT and MM did not think he was a good fit for GB. We must not have even made an offer - obviously he could be signed incredibly cheaply.
I can't imagine Gray thinks Houston has a better chance to win in 2008, and I also wouldn't think he has a chance to unseat Shaub as the starter either. They must not have liked him for GB.

Gray had a subpar performance when he was starting a few games last year. A no.3 guy for near minimum contract yes, but for no.2 not good.

He wasn't a subpar starter last season. He had 10 TD to 5 INT with a QB rating at 85.6. Not Pro Bowl numbers, but solid and he's the best free agent QB available this year (although that's not saying much). He's not a quality starter to build around, but he would have been a good backup. Plus he signed for near minimum wage which makes him an even better signing for the Texans. Hopefully this means Ted Thompson has got his eyes on a good rookie QB in what is a deep draft class at the position.
