McCarthy: Wells could be active as backup
Center Scott Wells hasn't practiced since suffering a setback with his lower back injury on Monday, but coach Mike McCarthy today left open the possibility Wells could be on the 45-man roster as a backup for Monday's game.
"That's an option," McCarthy said, indicating Wells' status will be decided shortly before the game. "I don't see him starting, but (suiting up as a backup)'s definitely an option."
That gives the Packers a starting line of (left to right): Chad Clifton, Daryn Colledge, Jason Spitz, Tony Moll and Mark Tauscher.
End Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee) also will be a game-time decision, McCarthy said.
The Packers' medical staff hasn't made a decision on linebacker A.J. Hawk (chest), who completed practice for the third consecutive day.
Asked whether he expects Hawk to be cleared, McCarthy said, "Hope so. ... Just taking all the information, and we'll make a decision. Nothing's changed as far as our plan for A.J. Giving him the opportunity to come back -- just didn't want to do too much too fast, but he feels great. We'll see how he feels in the morning."
Hawk said he feels "good, 100 percent" and has no pain or discomfort from the injury, which he suffered while breaking up a pass in the exhibition opener on Aug. 11.
"It’s really just trying to figure out if they feel like I’ve had enough time, they keep saying, to heal properly and to not have a chance to re(injure) it," he said. "That's what they’re still kind of mulling over. ... So, I guess for me, it’s good at least that they’re talking. I have a chance."
Running back Ryan Grant (hamstring) completed practice a day after sitting out, McCarthy said.
Quick hits
* Sunday will follow a normal Saturday schedule for the Packers, who will finish their work at Lambeau Field around 11 a.m. and then leave for their hotel. They'll have their walkthrough on Monday morning.
* That schedule won't allow McCarthy to watch Brett Favre's debut as a New York Jet. "I'll be working," McCarthy said. "I'm going to work on Detroit (the Packers' next opponent), if you must know."
