Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby (2) reacts after missing a 55-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter Sunday night against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Evan Siegle/Press-Gazette Media
Rants and raves from Sunday night's game between the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The Packers lost 38-10.
Rant: With Mason Crosby only making 20 percent of his field goals from 50 yards and beyond this season, why does coach Mike McCarthy insist on trotting him out for low-percentage, long field goals? He allowed Crosby to attempt a 55-yarder in the first quarter, which was wide left and gave the Giants excellent field position at their 45, which they converted into a touchdown.
Rave: In one of the few offensive highlights of the game, Jordy Nelson beat Corey Webster by at least two steps on a stop-and-go route in the first quarter, and Rodgers hit him in stride on a 61-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline. It took the Packers just four plays and 1:54 to drive 77 yards for the touchdown on their first series.
Rant: Morgan Burnett and Davon House collided in mid-air on what could have been a second-quarter interception of a well-covered deep pass intended for Hakeem Nicks. The Giants wound up scoring a touchdown on the drive.
Rave: Dezman Moses was held by Will Beatty in the second quarter but managed to sack Eli Manning anyway. Two plays later the Giants were forced to punt.
Rant: Tramon Williams appeared to take on a blocker rather than attempt to make a tackle on Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw on a 59-yard first-quarter screen pass that set up a New York touchdown.
Rave: On the next play after Jermichael Finley dropped a pass in the second quarter, Rodgers went back to his tight end, who bowled over Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara for a 9-yard gain. Finley also showed good reaction with a diving 16-yard third-quarter reception off a tipped pass.
Rant: Casey Hayward dropped a sure interception that hit him in the hands in the first quarter. The errant Manning pass was intended for Victory Cruz, and Hayward could have either returned it for a touchdown or at least given the Packers the ball inside the red zone.
Rave: One of the defense’s few shining moments in the first half was stuffing Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw for a loss of 1 yard on third and 1 from the Green Bay 24. That forced the Giants to settle for a field goal.
Rant: On the Giants’ 55-yard touchdown drive late in the first quarter, they gained 39 yards on the ground in six carries, including a 13-yard scramble by Eli Manning. The Giants finished with 147 rushing yards in the game.
Rave: Davon House took down Bradshaw with a nice open-field tackle late in the first half following a short pass reception. Bradshaw needed 5 yards for a first down and House stopped him 2 yards short, which forced the Giants to punt.
Rant: The Packers lost the turnover battle 2-0, with Rodgers throwing and interception and fumbling on a sack. The Giants converted those miscues into 10 points.
Rave: No matter where the Packers play, it’s become commonplace for John Kuhn to receive a salute from Green Bay fans in the crowd with chants of “Kuuuuuuuuuuhn” whenever he touches the ball. It happened on a 32-yard reception in the second quarter, and again on a 6-yard catch and 2-yard run in the first quarter.
