Starting safety Morgan Burnett was held out of practice today after injuring his ankle part way through the workout.
The injury didn't appear to be serious – Burnett remained on the practice field observing with his position group and didn't have his ankle wrapped in ice. Coach Mike McCarthy said only that Burnett "tweaked his ankle so we held him."
With Burnett out, first-round draft pick Ha Ha Clinton-Dix finished practice in his place with the No. 1 defense, paired with Micah Hyde.
-- Outside linebacker Mike Neal returned to practice today off PUP and took part in all drills, including a few team snaps, after missing the first three practices because of a strained abdominal muscle.
In past years a player coming off PUP during camp was prohibited from practicing in pads for two days. But the NFL and NFLPA changed that rule this year.
-- Rookie safety Tanner Miller left practice with an injured right ankle and didn't return.
-- McCarthy wouldn't go into specifics but suggested that the health issue that's sidelined rookie receiver Jeff Janis for the first four days of camp is uncommon. Janis has attended practice as a spectator the last two days.
"Jeff's situation's a little different," McCarthy said. "I couldn't really even explain it. We're watching him, we'll be smart. I definitely think (his return is) going to be sooner rather than later."
-- The Packers claimed receiver Gerrard Sheppard off waivers. Sheppard (6-2, 207) played in college for Towson and was cut by the Baltimore Ravens this week.
