The Green Bay Packers' worst fear has been realized.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, running back Cedric Benson will miss at least eight weeks with the Lisfranc foot injury he sustained during the second quarter of Sunday's 30-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Since signing with the Packers on Aug. 12, Benson had developed into the Packers' every-down running back with 71 carries for 248 yards and one touchdown over the first five games of this season.

"He had initial work done this morning and Dr. (Pat) McKenzie asked for more work this afternoon," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said earlier today. "I saw Cedric there before the team meeting and Dr. McKenzie had to go to surgery, and Ted and I have not discussed the later testing that’s gone on. But he clearly won’t be available this week."

Without Benson, the Packers will rely on the same running back contingent they entered the season with in Alex Green, Brandon Saine and James Starks.

Starks has been inactive all five games this season, but has been cleared to return after sustaining a turf toe injury in the preseason-opener against San Diego, which ushered in the Packers signing Benson.

New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes recently suffered the same exact injury as Benson before being placed on injured reserve this past week.
