WE Energies is requesting that customers keep exhaust vents and natural gas meters free of snow during the winter season, according to a news release from the company.
Snow and ice accumulation on furnace vents can lead to potentially deadly carbon monoxide levels in homes and damage natural gas meters, according to the news release. Customers should use a broom to gently brush snow off the meter and avoid kicking or hitting the meter to break away ice or snow build-up. Snow should be shoveled away from the meter, according to the news release. Customers using snow throwers or plows should also be careful around the meters.
Customers who detect a natural gas odor should leave the house immediately and call the We Energies gas emergency number at 800-261-5325 from a nearby phone.
