The thought occurred to me that not all of society is stuck indoors hunched over a computer or other technology. What are people doing these days? Looks like many love the outdoors, judging from the outdoor events that I go to and others that I read about at Wisconsinoutdoorfun.com.

Then there are the many who are intensely interested in maple syruping.

Hundreds attended the 2013 open house over a four-day period at Roth Sugar Bush, a maple syrup producer and equipment supplier in Cadott. I had been told last year that Roth’s had extended the open house to three days to accommodate customers. A fourth day was added this year due to increased attendance.

Another sign of the increasing growth of ‘maple fever:’ after more than half-a-century in the countryside, Roth’s plans to build a larger facility this summer near the intersection of Wisconsin highways 27 and 29 in Cadott.

Back at the open house – seminars on maple syrup production techniques and equipment were offered and generous breakfast and lunch buffets were served.

The open house is prime time for Roth’s to let those who sell syrup to them know about business details such as quality, procedures, and government requirements.

We took Roth’s up on their offer to view their sugar bush. We drove a few miles on a hilly road to see the new tubing setup. Tubing and tapping techniques continue to improve, in part due to scientific studies done at Cornell University and at the University of Vermont’s Proctor Maple Research Center.
