Home construction climbs 6.8 percent

Housing starts rose 6.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 914,000, the government reported Tuesday.

April's rate was revised up to 856,000 from the 853,000 pace originally reported.

Single-family housing starts rose 0.3 percent last month after two months of declines.

Housing starts were expected to pick up last month because of a surge in building permits in April.

Obama: Bernanke likely to leave Fed

President Barack Obama has given the clearest signal yet that Chairman Ben Bernanke will likely leave the Federal Reserve when his term ends in January.

During an interview with PBS' Charlie Rose that aired Monday, Obama said Bernanke has "already stayed a lot longer than he wanted or he was supposed to." Obama also said Bernanke has done "an outstanding job."

Obama's comments came in response to a question that touched on whether he would reappoint Bernanke to a third four-year term.

Chrysler backpedals, recalls 2.7M Jeeps

Chrysler Group did an about-face Tuesday and said it will recall 2.7 million Jeeps, as the government had requested.

Affected are the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says those are involved too often in deadly fires after rear crashes. Chrysler had been insisted that's not true.
