Sometimes pastimes present themselves in unexpected ways.

Phyllis Schippers' husband, Dr. Timothy Maatman, was a resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit when he became involved with sailing by becoming a crew member of a boat owned by a physician. The doctor's wife didn't sail.

"When we decided to get a boat, I decided I wasn't going to be a sailing widow," said Schippers, who took the necessary classes through the Coast Guard to learn more and stay safe. ...
