MILWAUKEE (AP) - A 17-year-old girl suffered bite wounds to her arms, leg and shoulder area when she was attacked by a pit bull in a Milwaukee alley.

Police say a citizen heard the victim's screams, grabbed a shovel and tried to stop the attack Monday evening. The dog turned its attention to the girl's friend and the citizen continued to use the shovel to stop the attacks.

Authorities say the citizen's son got a handgun and shot the dog while it continued to attack. There's no immediate word on the condition of the two people who were attacked. The dog survived and was turned over to animal control.
