Stocks rise on encouraging reports on US economy

NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks advanced in early trading Thursday after unemployment claims fell close to their lowest level in six years and a new data that showed economic growth accelerated in the third quarter.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index had dropped for five straight days through Wednesday, its longest losing streak this year, because of the potential for a government shut down as the administration and the Republicans square off in a budget fight.

The S&P 500 rose eight points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,701. The Dow Jones industrial average advanced 82 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,353. The Nasdaq ...
