It is a wonderful time of the year to get out in the Wisconsin woods or on the water to see the fall fireworks.

From Willow River State Park in St. Croix County to Rib Mountain State Park in Marathon County to Merrick and Perrot state parks along the Mississippi River, the annual autumn fashion show is underway.

Wisconsin is a top fall tourism destination, which comes as no surprise to me, my wife and daughters. It is one of our favorite times of the year. The air is crisp and the colors are often spectacular.

It is a good time to get out for a solo hike, or go with family or friends to enjoy one of our many state parks, trails or wildlife areas. Take in the rich autumn air and the lemony yellows, deer hunter oranges and Badger reds.

Lakeshores, like Pepin and Wissota, and river ways, including the Chippewa, Kinnickinnic and St. Croix, dominate the landscape at many west central Wisconsin state parks, forests, wildlife areas and trails.

You can’t go wrong wherever you go, but one of my family’s favorite destinations in any season is the drive along the Great River Road, with towering bluffs to the east and the Mississippi River on the west. This scenic road will deliver you to lots of local and state parks, along with the Great River and La Crosse River state trails.

From east to west and north to south, there is a colorful state park, forest or wildlife area near you. Bring your camera, binoculars, a picnic basket and come out and enjoy the season. We’ll look forward to seeing you out there!
