A significant restriction on gun deer hunters in much of northeastern Wisconsin will be lifted before the nine-day, traditional gun deer hunt in late November.

For as long as most people can remember, gun deer hunters in southern Shawano County and in all of Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties have been restricted to shotguns, muzzleloaders and approved handguns.

In other words, they could not hunt deer with a rifle. A rule change that takes effect Nov. 1 removes this restriction statewide. ...
