'The Bachelor' recap: Colton sends (SPOILER) home in devastating elimination
The final four women vying for Colton’s heart brought him to their hometowns on this week's "The Bachelor" to meet the parents. But by episode’s end, only three of them will have a chance of keeping him around their family for good.
And trust us: This week’s elimination is one you won’t see coming.
Let’s dive into this week’s shenanigans (which, sorry, still don’t include the infamous fence jump).
First up: Caelynn! She’s from Fredericksburg, Virginia, and she and Colton spend time riding around town in a horse-drawn carriage. Her favorite spot is Carl’s, an ice cream shop, and the two adorably share some cones.
Then it’s time to meet the family. Caelynn’s biological dad isn’t a part of her life, so Colton meets her stepfather, John, who she considers to be her dad. Ariana, Caelynn’s sister, pulls her aside. Caelynn explains this experience is the hardest thing she’s done in her life. Ariana wants to know if Caelynn was comfortable enough to discuss her sexual assault with Colton.
Colton tells Caelynn’s mom that he’s falling in love with her daughter. “This is definitely new territory for us,” she says, which, obviously.
Caelynn tells John that she wants to get married, but he pushes back and doesn’t want her to get her heart broken again. The pair have a sweet bonding moment before John and Colton have that chat.
John asks Colton, “How far are you going to take this relationship? Where is your head in this and where is your heart in it?” Colton says they have shared that they love each other, and asks for permission to marry Caelynn. John asks if he’s ready to get married and Colton says yes. John said that he would need Colton to promise that the marriage, from the foundation all the way through, would be a lifetime commitment. If marriage is built on that foundation, he would welcome him into family and would have permission to ask Caelynn. (Remember: Getting a father’s permission here is a sticking point for Colton. He won’t propose without it.)
Caelynn later tells Colton that she’s confident she’s fully in love with him.
Does Colton earn a first-impression rose from Hannah G.’s family?
Next up: first-impression rose-winner, Hannah G., of Birmingham, Alabama. The hometown visit starts off with her accompanying Colton to an etiquette class to turn him into a Southern gentleman. He can balance a book on his head (good) but he doesn’t know how to properly butter bread (bad).
Colton will be meeting Hannah G.’s mother, Beth, father, Tom, three of her cousins and her best friend.
Tom asks Colton what his intentions are toward Hannah, and Colton says tells Tom that his daughter was special from the moment he met her. Colton gets his permission to propose.
Hannah G. assures her mom she wouldn’t be doing all this if it wasn’t something she was truly excited about. While Beth was initially wary, and after Hannah gets teary-eyed, Beth says, “You go get it, girl.” Beth says in an aside: “She left here a mama’s girl and she came back a woman in love.”
Hannah G. says she’s falling in love with him and Colton says the same. There is arguably too much love talk and we’ve only gone to two hometowns.
Tayshia’s father plays hardball
Ally-less Tayshia, of Santa Ana, California, is next. Tayshia blindfolds Colton "Bird Box"-style … and takes him skydiving! Neither of them are fans of heights, so, sure, this seems like a great idea. He thinks it’s payback from when he took her bungee-jumping.
The two then separately tandem-skydive. Colton says in a voiceover before he jumps: “God please let me survive this fall. I still have to lose my virginity. I don’t know what I’m missing yet but I heard it’s really good. Amen.” Awwww.
Tayshia tells him she’s falling in love with him, and he says he’s falling love with her, too. (Are you all seeing a pattern here?)
Tayshia warned Colton her father, Desmond, would be tough, and she was right. After Colton tells him he’s falling in love with Tayshia, her father (rightly!) asks if he’s having the same types of conversations with other girls. “How could you fall in love − if you are in love − with more than one person?” he asks. Colton says he never thought it was possible, nor did he have the opportunity to fall in love and be in love with more than one person before. Dad asks if he’d be able to answer honestly if Tayshia asked if he was in love with someone else. Colton says yes. Dad asks for Colton to have respect for Tayshia and anyone else, and to not lead anyone on. Colton does not receive her father’s blessing.
But wait: After talking with Tayshia (where he delivers the best quote of the episode, or maybe decade, “You don’t microwave relationships”), Desmond reconsiders and does give Colton permission to ask Tayshia to marry him. Yawn. Where’s the drama?
The Cassie conundrum
Oh, there’s the drama! Cassie, of Huntington Beach, California, takes Colton surfing. He says in a voiceover that “she’s got, like, the perfect balance of sexy and cute,” channeling the film “Crazy Stupid Love.”
But this ain’t exactly a rom-com: Cassie has yet to express her love for Colton. She doesn’t want to say it unless she’s sure she really means it.
“If I’m gonna accept a proposal … it’s gonna be because I’m sure,” Cassie tells her father, Matt. He reminds her she doesn’t need to rush into anything.
Matt tells Colton that giving him his blessing would be premature … meaning Cassie, in theory, is the only woman Colton wouldn’t feel comfortable asking to marry him.
And by the time the two part, Cassie still hasn’t expressed her feelings to Colton.
The shock elimination
So, what’s a bachelor to do once the group comes together in Los Angeles?
Hannah G. gets the first rose and Tayshia gets the second. Caelynn and Cassie look at each other, and Caelynn blurts out an expletive …
… then CASSIE gets the rose!!! We gasp.
Caelynn tells Cassie, “I love you. Bye friend. Get engaged.”
Caelynn says she’s blindsided (understandably!) and that she feels like an idiot, and starts crying. She 100 percent believed she was getting engaged at end of this, she later says in the car. Crazy, stupid love, indeed.
Colton pulls Chris Harrison aside after the episode, and the three remaining women start thinking about the fantasy suite.
