Colorectal cancer is considered one of the most preventable, but is the No. 2 killing cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the cancer that killed Green Bay Packers and Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi.

The Packers are working with Exact Sciences of Madison to promote colorectal cancer awareness and screening.

The effort, which encourages people to get checked for colon cancer beginning at age 50, will include online pledges, a ticket giveaway contest and a digital campaign. Former Lombardi-era lineman and Packers Hall of Fame member Jerry Kramer will be a spokesman.

Four grand-prize winners will receive tickets to attend the Oct. 22 game against the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field. Other prizes, such as gift cards, will be awarded.

Exact Sciences will have a booth at the Saints game to raise money for the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, as well.

Exact Sciences manufactures Cologuard, a noninvasive screening product that uses DNA found in a person's stool sample to detect colon cancer and precancerous growths.

It can be used with other diagnostics screenings to detect and treat precancerous and cancerous conditions.

Cancer foundation fundraiser

Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation has scheduled a fundraiser for Oct. 21 at The Automobile Gallery and Event Center, 400 S. Adams St., downtown Green Bay. It will include craft beer sampling, food from local restaurants and live music. Green Bay Packers alumni will participate.

Tickets are $100 per person. Information is available at www.lombardifoundation.org or by calling 262-696-5177. Space is limited.

The Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation funds cancer research and compassionate care.

The Foundation also is participating in a new Packers Vs. Cancer initiative with the team and Bellin Health. The Oct. 21 fundraising event is separate from campaign.
