Is Paul McCartney coming to Lambeau Field? Rumor says yes
GREEN BAY – Rumors are flying that Paul McCartney could twist and shout in Green Bay next year, apparently based on a Facebook ad.
The only likely venue for such a concert would be Lambeau Field, but the Green Bay Packers said Wednesday they have nothing scheduled for next year, the earliest a concert could be held there.
"We have no announcements regarding any potential concerts for 2019," said Aaron Popkey, Packers director of public affairs.
McCartney will be in neighborhood, so to speak.
His Freshen Up Tour is stopping June 6, 2019, at the Kohl Center in Madison. That show went on sale Sept. 7 and tickets, priced at $273 to $27.50, are already sold out, according to the Ticketmaster website. The capacity for concerts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison venue is 14,025 to 17,300, depending on the stage configuration.
McCartney, 76, is launching his Freshen Up Tour on Sept. 17 in support of his newly released solo album, “Egypt Station.” He’ll play four cities in Canada in September before heading overseas for dates through December.
His U.S. dates begin in May 2019, with eight cities announced to date. According to the itinerary, the next date listed after June 6 in Madison (a Thursday night) is June 11 (a Tuesday night) at TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Illinois. That leaves an open weekend between dates. However, all the U.S. shows listed so far are at arenas.
Acts the size of McCartney do not normally schedule concerts in geographically close sites. On the other hand, Madison is 160 miles from Moline and 130 miles from Green Bay, and the Madison concert already is sold out.
Lambeau Field last hosted a concert in the bowl on June 17, 2016, when Billy Joel played to a sold-out crowd of 45,602. The other major concerts at Lambeau Field were both visits by Kenny Chesney, in June 2015 and June 2011. All three concerts were on Saturday nights.
Lambeau Field was not available for a concert this year because of field reconstruction. Popkey said concourse reconstruction will on be ongoing, but a concert could be held during the 2019 summer concert window, which includes May and June.
The Packers will host a University of Wisconsin-Notre Dame football game in fall 2020.
