Packers fast-track planning for 2019 non-football event, keeping McCartney rumor alive
GREEN BAY – Lambeau Field might host a concert or some other event in spring 2019.
The Green Bay Packers are negotiating to host an unidentified event at Lambeau Field. Packers Director of Public Affairs Aaron Popkey said Tuesday it would not be a football game and it would happen in 2019.
The Packers asked the Green Bay/Brown County Professional Football Stadium District Board to hold a special meeting Tuesday to discuss its part in the negotiations.
Specifically, the board decided how much of the 10 percent ticket tax it collects on Lambeau Field special events it might be willing to rebate to help attract the event. The board met in closed session to set parameters for its executive director, Patrick Webb, to work with the Packers.
Popkey did not say when the Packers might have an announcement, but the team's unwillingness to wait until the stadium board's regularly scheduled meeting in December indicates negotiations are at a key point.
The Packers have said they'd like to hold one special event, such as a concert or a college football game, once a year in Lambeau Field. The last concert was Billy Joel in 2017. A football game between the University of Wisconsin and University of Notre Dame is scheduled for Oct. 3, 2020.
In addition to Billy Joel, Lambeau Field twice hosted Kenny Chesney. And in 2016, Wisconsin played LSU at the stadium. All were packed houses.
Earlier this year, a rumor circulated that Paul McCartney might be headed to Lambeau Field. His Freshen Up Tour is stopping June 6, 2019, at the Kohl Center in Madison. That show went on sale Sept. 7 and tickets, priced from $27.50 to $273, sold out. The capacity for concerts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison venue is 14,025 to 17,300, depending on the stage configuration.
McCartney's U.S. dates begin in May 2019. According to the itinerary, the next date listed after June 6 in Madison (a Thursday night) is June 11 (a Tuesday night) at TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Illinois. That leaves an open weekend between dates. However, all the U.S. shows listed so far are at arenas, not stadiums.
The capacity at Lambeau Field for concerts is about 45,000, depending on the configuration.
The practical window for concerts at Lambeau Field is late May to mid-June. The weather is iffy earlier in May, and the Packers have a mid-June cutoff so there is time for the football field's grass to recover before the Packers' season begins.
