Man forces Uber car off road in Tempe, then is hit by oncoming traffic

A man is in the hospital after police said he forced his Uber ride off the road, jumped out of the car and was hit by oncoming traffic in Tempe.
The Tempe Police Department responded to calls on Tuesday morning that a man was hit by a vehicle near University Drive and 52nd Street.
Police said the man had been in the passenger seat of an Uber vehicle traveling west when he reached over and grabbed the steering wheel, attempting to force the Uber off the road.
When the Uber hit a curb and stopped, the passenger got out of the car and ran into oncoming traffic, according to Tempe police.
He was hit by another vehicle and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said it isn't clear whether the man was impaired or not, but it was reported that, while in the Uber, he was making statements that he wanted to hurt himself.
