Morning Buzz: No quarterback wins alone

We’ll start with the launch of our nine part positional preview series, beginning with Michael Cohen’s look at the Packers quarterbacks.

From Michael:

Internally, there is nothing to suggest Rodgers is on the verge of slowing down. He returned to Green Bay in what he described as the best shape he’s been in for the annual offseason program, and changes in his diet have paid dividends in recent years. More empirically, quarterbacks around the league are having success on the verge of 40 years old — see: Brady, Tom; Brees, Drew; Palmer, Carson — and by that standard Rodgers is a relative youngster at 33. (He will be 34 in December.)

This post from new Cheesehead TV contributor Elisha Twerski comparing Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, for the purposes of exploring the importance of a quarterback’s supporting cast, is absolutely outstanding.

From Twerski:

In their seven postseason losses with Rodgers as quarterback, the Packers defense has allowed an average of 36.3 points. Comparatively, in their nine postseason losses with Brady as quarterback, the Patriots defense has allowed an average of 26.4 points. That’s nearly a 10 point difference. In addition, in 34 games with Brady as quarterback, the Patriots defense has allowed just three 30-plus point games.

Rodgers has never lost a postseason game when the opposing team scored 21 points or fewer. Brady has lost three such games. As noted by a Packers fan account on Twitter, Green Bay has never scored under 20 points in the playoffs with Rodgers as quarterback. New England, with Brady, has done so nine times including twice in the Super Bowl. Rodgers has had two multi-interception games in the playoffs, Brady has had nine.
