Every year CBS Sports ranks Power 5 college football head coaches and amid an NCAA recruiting investigation, we were especially interested to see where Arizona State's Herm Edwards ranked on the 2022 list.

The answer?

Lower than in 2021. A lot lower.

CBS Sports has Edwards ranked as the No. 55 best coach among the Power 5 college football conferences for this season. He dropped a whopping 34 spots after being ranked No. 21 in 2021.

There are 65 college football teams in Power 5 conferences.

Tom Fornelli wrote of Edwards' ranking: "No coach fell further in the rankings this year than Edwards. Herm was ranked in the top 25 last season following a shortened 2020 season that saw the Sun Devils go 2-2. While ASU went 8-5 in 2021, this ranking has far more to do with what's happening off the field. The program is dealing with NCAA problems, and multiple players hit the transfer portal, including starting QB Jayden Daniels. There's an impending sense of doom surrounding the program, and it has affected how Herm was viewed by our panel."

Edwards was ranked No. 30 on the CBS Sports list in 2020. In 2019, He was No. 54.

After he was hired in 2018, the site had Edwards ranked No. 64 (second to last) among Power 5 college football coaches.

It has certainly been a rocky road in the rankings for Edwards.

Last year, Fornelli wrote this of his No. 21 ranking: "Here's a fun exercise. Compare the reaction to Harbaugh's hire at Michigan when it happened to the reaction to Arizona State hiring Herm. Harbaugh was a grand slam hire, while Edwards was met with bewilderment. Yet here we are with Edwards ranked higher than Harbaugh a few years later. It's an excellent example of how expectations can skew your view of a coach because Edwards is only 17-13 at Arizona State and 11-11 in conference play. His best season of 8-5 in 2019 matches Harbaugh's worst record at Michigan. And yet ... "

Interestingly, Fornelli wrote this about Edwards after his hire in 2018: "Herm starts at 64, and he might be the most volatile coach on this list. I can't help but believe his time with the Sun Devils is either a disaster or a major success. No in between."

ASU football coach Herm Edwards plummeted in a ranking of Power 5 head coaches in college football for 2022.

Arizona coach climbs 3 spots

Arizona's Jedd Fisch climbed to No. 61 in CBS Sports' ranking of the Power 5 college football coaches for 2022 after being No. 64 last season.

Just four coaches are behind him in the ranking.

Fornelli wrote of Fisch: "The second-year coach inherited an Arizona program that was a shambles last season, and it showed in the team's record. The Wildcats went 1-11 in Fisch's debut, and even though he moves up three spots in the rankings, it's only because he has experience now. Even so, he's still ranked behind other coaches yet to coach a game."
