In the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night, the Bills traded up and selected Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen No. 7 overall. Here are five things you should know about Allen.

1. Josh Allen grew up on a small-town farm

He grew up on a 3,000-acre farm about 40 miles from Fresno, California. The main crops are cotton, cantaloupe and wheat, and during the summers, Allen would help his dad move irrigation piping, pick cotton, drive tractors, or whatever else was needed to keep the operation humming.

2. Allen's great-grandfather arrived at Ellis Island from Sweden

Allen’s family has lived in the area since his great-grandfather, who emigrated from Sweden in 1907, settled there during the Great Depression. The farm was established in 1975 by his paternal grandfather, whom the gymnasium at Allen’s high school was named after.

3. Josh Allen is going from no college scholarship offers to the NFL

He did not receive any scholarship offers out of his small-town northern California high school, so he began his college at Reedley Community College and in his lone season there in 2014, he threw for 26 TDs and 285 yards per game. That’s where Wyoming coach Craig Bohl saw him, and offered him a scholarship. Bohl is the same coach who recruited and developed Carson Wentz at North Dakota State.

4. He doesn't have huge numbers

In 27 games at Wyoming, Allen topped 300 yards passing only twice, and those games came against UNLV (334 yards) and Gardner-Webb (328), so his inability to dominate against a lower level of competition is a concern among NFL scouts. His career numbers include just 44 TDs compared to 21 interceptions.

5. Josh Allen struggled against top competition in college

In three games against power-five schools Nebraska, Oregon and Iowa, Allen threw one TD pass compared to eight interceptions and lost all three games.
