Kimberly cross-country teams head to state

MANITOWOC - The Kimberly boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams both won Division 1 sectional championships Saturday at Meadow Links Golf Course.

The Kimberly boys scored 52 points to edge Green Bay Preble by two points for the title. The Kimberly girls had 75 points to beat second-place De Pere by four points.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the WIAA State Tournament, which is Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.

Isaac Benz finished second overall for the Kimberly boys in 15:55, while Rowen Ellenberg was third in 15:57 and Jack Fitzgerald eighth in 16:36. Will Demerath (14th) and Jesse Lambrecht (25th) rounded out the top five runners for the Papermakers.

Olivia Eisch led the Kimberly girls with a third-place finish overall in 19:22. Ashtyn Johnson was eighth (19:50) and Mada Laundrie was 11th (20:00). Cydnee Van Zeeland (25th) and Lindsay Rooyaakers (28th) also scored for Kimberly.

Stevens Point Sectional

At Stevens Point, the Appleton North boys and the Hortonville girls advanced to state with second-place finishes in their respective races.

The North boys scored 67 points to finish behind Stevens Point (31). The Hortonville girls had 62 points to finish six behind Stevens Point.

Noah Bruehl of Appleton East finished 10th in 17:00 to advance to state as an individual. Hortonville’s Joseph Nicholson (11th, 17:02) and Michael Jarvis (12th, 17:06) also advanced to state.

Ethan Cruz led Appleton North with a third-place finish in 16:20. Thomas Weed was fifth in 16:32 and Stephen Dinkler was eighth in 16:54.

The Hortonville girls were led by Alyssa Rafuse (19:21) and Hannah Lohrenz (19:21), who finished in second and third place overall, respectively.

The Appleton North girls had two runners advance to state as individuals. Mary Rose Flood finished fourth overall in 19:21 and Sydney Squier was seventh in 19:51.
