Arizona Cardinals' Kyler Murray added to '2nd Tier' NFL quarterbacks list
Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd has updated his lists of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.
Among the changes?
The Arizona Cardinals' Kyler Murray is now listed among six quarterbacks on his "2nd Tier of Quarterbacks" list.
Earlier this month, Cowherd omitted Murray from a couple of lists and Cardinals fans were not happy with it.
Cowherd has the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Tom Brady, the Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers, the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson, the Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen and the Houston Texans' Deshaun Watson on his "Top 6 Quarterbacks" list.
Joining Murray on the "2nd Tier" list are the Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson, the Los Angeles Chargers' Justin Herbert, the Las Vegas Raiders' Derek Carr, the San Francisco 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo and the Atlanta Falcons' Matt Ryan.
The Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott, the Minnesota Vikings' Kirk Cousins and the Los Angeles Rams' Matthew Stafford were on a list of "arguably great" quarterbacks of Cowherd's earlier this month, but didn't make his "2nd Tier" list, with Herbert, Carr and Garoppolo and Murray now joining Jackson on that list.
Who would you include among the top quarterbacks and the second tier quarterbacks in the NFL?
Original story from Feb. 5:
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has shown a lot of promise and a lot of potential during his two seasons in the NFL.
But it has evidently not been enough for him to be considered a "great" quarterback, according to one national sports personality.
Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd recently ranked "arguably great" and "unarguably great" quarterbacks in the NFL and his omission of Murray on both lists left some Cardinals fans in an uproar.
Six quarterbacks made Cowherd's "unarguably great" list: The Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, the Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Tom Brady, the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson, the Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers and the Houston Texans' Deshaun Watson.
Five quarterbacks made his "arguably great" list: The Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson, the Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott, the Minnesota Vikings' Kirk Cousins, and the Los Angeles Rams' Matthew Stafford.
Fans sounded off on social media on Murray not being included in either list:
Not Cowherd's first controversial take involving Murray
This isn't Cowherd's first controversial take involving Murray.
In August of 2019, he famously (or infamously) said that "Dwayne Haskins is the future, not Kyler Murray."
"Murray may be way more interesting," Cowherd said, "but Dwayne Haskins is a kid developing into a man. I'm going to go with that.
"I don't want to hear about running quarterbacks. I know it's new, cool, fun, shiny, wow! I'll take pocket guys."
The next month, Cowherd slammed Murray's communication skills.
This story out of Arizona," Cowherd said. "Kliff Kingsbury is verbal. He played quarterback. He says Kyler Murray doesn't really talk ... This is not a little thing. This is a big issue. It's not a little thing. It has been the struggle with Cutler and Mariota, they don't communicate well. By the way, sometimes I don't even love all the communication with Aaron Rodgers and Big Ben (Ben Roethlisberger), but they talk a lot. A lot. Condescending. start fires. But they are verbal. "
However, Cowherd had a much different take on Murray in April of 2020.
He called Murray the best athlete in the world then.
"Magic Johnson says LeBron James is the best athlete in the world! I, of course, you would think would say yes and I'm gonna say, no he's not. No he's not," Cowherd said on his show. "First of all, Kyler Murray was the first pick in the NFL Draft and also in Major League Baseball, was he a first-round pick in Major League Baseball? Yeah, Top 10. So that's proof, not opinion and I'm into that these days. Proof, data, not opinion, no agendas."
