On Oct. 2, 2005, the Cardinals played the 49ers in front of a then-record 103,467 fans in Mexico City.

The Arizona Cardinals will be returning to Mexico City in 2022.

The NFL announced Monday that the team will play a regular season game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City as part of the 2022 NFL season.

The date, opponent and kickoff time will be announced when the NFL announces the complete 2022 NFL schedule later this year.

With NFL teams now playing 17 games each season, the Cardinals will now play eight 2022 regular season games at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, eight on the road, and the game in Mexico City, a neutral-site game.

In 2005, the Cardinals earned a 31-14 win over the 49ers at Estadio Azteca in front of a then-record crowd of 103,467 in the team's first game in Mexico City. It was the NFL's first regular season game held outside the United States.

“In 2005 when the Cardinals hosted the first NFL regular season game played outside the United States, we experienced first-hand the extraordinary support and incredible passion of our fans in Mexico,” said Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill. “We know that has increased exponentially in the years since and are thrilled to return to Mexico City and Estadio Azteca in 2022.”

The Cardinals' game in Mexico City in 2022 will be the NFL's fifth at Estadio Azteca.

In 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs earned a 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Estadio Azteca on Monday Night Football, two-and-a-half months before winning Super Bowl LIV.

Estadio Azteca also hosted the Patriots-Raiders in 2017 and Texans-Raiders in 2016.

The Cardinals will join the Raiders as the only teams to have played multiple regular season games at Estadio Azteca.

The Cardinals also played in the first NFL game outside of North America when they played the Chargers in a preseason game in Tokyo, Japan on Aug. 16, 1976.

The Cardinals also played the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 6, 1983 in a preseason game at Wembley Stadium in London, the first NFL game in Europe.
