Report: Agent for Cardinals QB Kyler Murray pulls original contract proposal off the table

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, contract talks between the Cardinals and quarterback Kyler Murray have gone nowhere and Murray’s agent, Eric Burkhardt, informed the team he was removing his opening proposal.

Pelissero added it will be a “surprise” if Murray were to play on his present deal, which will pay him $5.5 million in 2022.

That wouldn’t be shocking considering how the quarterback market has exploded this offseason with big names such as Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr also receiving contract extensions worth $40 million or more in recent weeks.

It doesn’t mean a deal can’t be reached between the Cardinals and Murray. There is still plenty of time to negotiation an extension. In the meantime, however, it begs the question as to whether Murray intends to stage a full-throttled holdout and refuse to report for voluntary team workouts next week, upcoming mini camps or training camp later this summer.

Pelissero added that although the two sides haven’t reached an agreement yet and negotiations have stalled, the team “insists” it will not trade Murray even if “other teams are monitoring (the situation) closely.”

During a charitable event last month, Murray told reporters he wasn’t too concerned about his future with the Cardinals.

“I’m an Arizona Cardinal. I’ve done nothing but give my all to the Cardinals and will continue to do that. I’m not really too worried about my future as a Cardinal.”

Citing an unnamed source, Kyle Odegard of Compare.bet said via Twitter that Murray has no plans to ask for a trade before the upcoming NFL draft, which is set for April 28-30. Although that might be true, it doesn’t mean Burkhardt, acting on Murray’s behalf, won’t ask the Cardinals to trade his client.
