Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson watch Colts practice week after foot surgeries

Quarterback Carson Wentz and All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson were at Colts practice Tuesday, albeit only watching from the sidelines.

Both players had foot surgery last week and are expected to miss 5-12 weeks. Neither had a boot or wrap on his foot, though it's not known if that's relevant to their recoveries. A return after five weeks would have the players back for the season opener, or they could miss as many as seven games.

Colts coach Frank Reich said the players' appearance at practice was encouraging but there is a two-week period before they can be properly evaluated.

Wentz and Nelson each had a piece of bone floating in his foot that required surgery. Wentz's is believed to be a result of a previous injury, perhaps as long ago as high school, while Nelson's was due to a developmental anomaly, according to Reich.

Dr. A. Holly Johnson, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle injuries at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, told IndyStar a more likely timetable for recovery is 8-12 weeks but there is not a lot of research among athletes with these injuries. Johnson has not treated or seen either player.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz (2), on his first day back after foot surgery, chats with Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich at Grand Park in Westfield on Monday, August 10, 2021, on the third week of workouts of this summer's Colts training camp.

Wentz had surgery Aug. 2, Nelson Aug. 3.

"You can't make this stuff up, right?" Reich said in announcing Nelson's injury.

Reich said there were no complications with either surgery. Rehabilitation was scheduled to begin two weeks after the surgery.

Wentz left practice July 29 after feeling pain following a throw. Nelson left practice on Aug. 2 with an injury but returned to watch the end of it and the severity wasn't diagnosed until later.
