Jeff Daniels talks about 'The Martian' during the 40th annual Toronto International Film Festival.

Chelsea actor Jeff Daniels was making a promotional appearance for "The Martian" on ESPN's "SportsCenter" this morning, and they just had to ask him about Monday night's Detroit Lions debacle.

"First of all, don't fumble the ball," Daniels said of Calvin Johnson losing the ball at the goal line. "Half a yard away from 1-3. Half a yard away from having to stop listening to how great Russell Wilson is. Half a yard away from just having our season back.

"You feel cursed. You really do. What happened to Calvin in Chicago ... that happened to us. Last night happened to us. It's just part of being a Lions fan. And it's just painful. I don't care what the Cubs fans say, this is more painful."

Notes: ESPN also gave the goal-line fumble its "Sport Science" treatment. ... And the billboard jokers apparently are out in Detroit again:
