Barclay's injury big blow to Packers OL depth

Don Barclay's season-ending knee injury takes a big bite out of the Packers' depth on the offensive line.

Barclay injured his right knee in practice Tuesday, and a source told the Press-Gazette Barclay he sustained a torn ACL, which will require knee-reconstruction surgery that will sideline the rest of the season.

Barclay was the Packers' most accomplished backup offensive lineman and the top backup at three positions: both guards and right tackle, plus, he can play center in a pinch. He's started 18 games, all at right tackle, but in training camp he's been playing far more guard than tackle.

"(Barclay) adds a ton of value to this line," guard Josh Sitton said after practice Tuesday. "You typically don't get a sixth guy that can play that many positions and has had that much experience with 20 games or started. That will be a big one if he's down."

The Packers usually suit up only seven offensive linemen on their 46-man game-day roster. Without Barclay, Derek Sherrod probably will be the backup at both tackles, not just the left side, and second-year pro Lane Taylor is the best bet to back up both guards.

Behind them, the Packers will be thin. Neither of their top two centers, JC Tretter or fifth-round draft pick Corey Linsley, has played much guard. Tretter's only experience there was late last season, when he worked there some on scout team in practice. He's played only center this year.

Linsley has practiced only at center since the Packers drafted him in May. His only playing time at guard came in his sophomore season at Ohio State in 2011, when he played there one game.

After Taylor, the Packers' backup guards are Andrew Tiller, who finished last season on their practice squad; undrafted rookie Jordan McCray of Central Florida; and Aaron Adams, who was on their practice squad last season and plays primarily tackle.

Barclay is in his third NFL season and no longer subject to a split salary if injured, so he will make his entire $570,000 base salary.
