The Green Bay Packers placed third-round pick Khyri Thornton on injured reserve after he sustained a hamstring injury in Thursday's preseason finale against Kansas City.

Green Bay Packers defensive linemen Khyri Thornton, left, and Datone Jones go through drills during minicamp practice at Ray Nitschke Field,.

Thornton, 24, had six tackles in four preseason games. Already light on defensive linemen, the organization must have felt Thornton's injury would sideline him long enough to place him on season-ending injured reserve.

The 6-foot-3, 304-pound rookie struggled to make much of an impact in his first NFL camp, which had him on the bubble entering the weekend. For now, it appears the Packers will shut him down for the season in hopes of getting more out of his next season.

Seven of Green Bay's nine draft picks from May made the 53-man roster. The only other omission was receiver Jared Abbrederis, who also was placed on injured reserve.

Extra points

• The Packers kept five wide receivers, with Jeff Janis being the fifth. It completes a whirlwind offseason for Janis, who goes from Saginaw Valley State, to the seventh round of the NFL draft, to missing the first week of training camp with shingles, to the 53-man roster.

• The New England Patriots cut former Packers defensive lineman Jerel Worthy. The Packers traded Worthy to the Patriots this month for a conditional seventh-round draft pick that hinged on him making the roster. With Worthy cut, the Packers won't get the pick.

• Four players who ended last season on the 53-man roster were removed Saturday. The Packers cut safety Chris Banjo and cornerback Jumal Rolle. Tight end Jake Stoneburner and linebacker Nate Palmer were placed on injured reserve.
