Report: NFL suspends Guion for 3 games
Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion reportedly was suspended three games by the NFL following a February drug arrest, but plans to appeal.
Guion was arrested Feb. 3 after being found with a handgun, three-quarters of a pound of marijuana and $190,000 in cash following a traffic stop in his hometown of Starke, Fla. His cash, gun and vehicle were confiscated by police.
Guion’s suspension was first reported by ESPN.com, which also reported Wednesday that Guion filed a suit to retrieve his possessions from Starke police. Guion’s agent, Seth Katz, would neither confirm nor deny the suspension when Press-Gazette Media contacted him Thursday morning.
“Whatever was leaked out wasn’t leaked by us,” Katz said. “We’re not offering any comments on the record.”
The league cannot comment on Guion’s suspension until the appeal process is complete, according to an NFL spokesman.
The Packers signed Guion to a one-year, $2.75 million contract this offseason. If he fails to win the appeal, Guion stands to lose $480,330. His loss of three game checks would amount to $264,705. He also would lose $215,625 in roster bonus over those three weeks.
Guion was a revelation at defensive tackle last season, his first with the Packers after spending his first six years with the Minnesota Vikings. He had a career season while replacing injured B.J. Raji, finishing with 26 tackles and 31/2 sacks.
With Raji’s return, Guion is expected to start at defensive end this fall. If he’s unable to play in the opener at Chicago, the Packers will be without two defensive linemen.
Defensive end Datone Jones was suspended for the opener by the NFL after receiving a marijuana citation in Green Bay on Jan. 19, hours after the Packers’ plane returned from the NFC championship game in Seattle.
The Packers also could be without tight end Andrew Quarless, who was arrested July 4 in Miami Beach, Fla., after discharging a gun in public, according to an arrest report. No suspension has been announced for Quarless.
