Backup quarterback Scott Tolzien was not among the Green Bay Packers' inactive players for tonight's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles after missing practice this week with a concussion.
It's unclear how much – if at all – Tolzien will play in the Packers' third preseason game. It's also unclear whether Tolzien practiced Friday, which was closed to the public. Tolzien was being evaluated for a concussion after Sunday's game at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Tolzien practiced drop backs about two hours before kickoff at Lambeau Field. He also tossed warmups passes with receiver Myles White.
A team's third preseason game traditionally offers the most playing time to key players. Tolzien, in his first season as Aaron Rodgers' primary backup, would fall under that category. But injuries have persuaded Packers coach Mike McCarthy to deviate from his usual plan. Nine Packers players will not dress because of injury tonight, including left tackle David Bakhtiari, left guard Josh Sitton and right guard T.J. Lang.
With those three offensive line starters out, Rodgers could be unlikely to play. There could be some significant preseason debuts tonight, especially on defense. Linebacker Clay Matthews and defensive end Mike Daniels should get their first preseason snaps tonight.
McCarthy has said tonight's game will be vital for rookie Brett Hundley and offseason addition Matt Blanchard. Earlier this week, Blanchard said he expects to play roughly an entire half. In theory, he and Hundley could take all the snaps at quarterback, even if Tolzien is healthy enough to play.
