Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields suffered a concussion in the Dec. 13 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will be without their No. 1 cornerback for the second consecutive week when they face the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.

Veteran Sam Shields, who still is recovering from a concussion, was ruled out Friday.

"Making progress," coach Mike McCarthy said when asked about Shields at his Friday morning news conference. "Really just talking with Dr. McKenzie this morning and Dr. Gray, they just said he’s making progress in the protocol is really what they told me."

Shields suffered his fifth documented concussion in the season opener against Jacksonville and has been sidelined ever since. McCarthy said Shields took part in a workout earlier this week and also meet with a specialist on Wednesday, but it seems his progress has stalled.

McCarthy did not say whether the specialist was an independent neurologist conducting a final review of Shields, something all players in the protocol must pass before they return.

Without Shields, the Packers will turn to Damarious Randall as their top corner. Quinten Rollins, LaDarius Gunter and Micah Hyde will provide depth. Undrafted rookie Josh Hawkins is also available after missing the first two games with a hamstring injury suffered in the exhibition finale.

The Lions, meanwhile, will be without their best pass rusher. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah did not practice at all this week after suffering an ankle injury. Like Shields, he has been ruled out.
