Cobb: Packers' win a 'resilient effort'

USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin’s Brett Christopherson caught up with Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb, who shared his thoughts on Thursday’s 26-10 victory over the Chicago Bears. This Q&A is presented by Tundraland:

You entered Thursday’s game with a depleted roster and coming off a shoddy offensive performance in a Week 6 loss to Dallas. As you look back on how the game against the Bears unfolded, what did you learn about your team and how it responds to adversity?

Cobb: Just resilient effort. We all stuck together and knew what we needed to do. And that was pretty much just play with the passion that we’re accustomed to playing with, play with the focus that we’re accustomed to playing with and just bringing the energy and feeding off of each other. And I think we did a great job of that.

Aaron Rodgers said after the game “this is more closer to how we’re going to have to play moving forward” in reference to spreading the field and using receiver Ty Montgomery out of the backfield. Do you agree? How would you describe your offensive identity right now?

Cobb: At this point in time, yeah. That’s what we’re going to have to rely on just because of the circumstances. Obviously, with Eddie (Lacy) being on IR, with (James) Starks being injured – we don’t know when he’s going to come back – and Knile (Davis) just now getting here, this is what we’re going to have to do. So you have to play with what you have and try to play to all those strengths.

You’re a dual-threat player in that you can also make plays out of the backfield. Having said that, what are your thoughts on the recent play of Montgomery, who has thrived at running back while trying to compensate for the injuries at that position?

Cobb: Ty is a playmaker. You look at him all over the field and what he has been able to accomplish these first couple of years. It’s great to see him come out here and be able to do those things. As a (kickoff returner), I think he has three returns over 40 yards. Lining up in the backfield and being able to make plays. Lining up as a receiver and making some big-time catches and breaking tackles. He has played exceptional. Every opportunity he has gotten, every time he has gotten a chance, he has done something special. That’s what we need. We’re going to need that from our guys. We’re going to need that from everybody, but especially Ty moving forward.

Montgomery said on our Clubhouse Live show that learning to play running back is like learning a new offense. Can you appreciate the challenges he has faced while filling that role?

Cobb: Yeah, it’s difficult to switch positions and do different things. He obviously has been given a few more carries and lining up as a running back a little bit more. So, it makes things challenging whenever he has to learn the protections and the routes and the route combinations that the running backs have to know. … He has done a great job so far with picking it up. The more that he’s able to do, the better off we can be.

Receiver Davante Adams had a career game in finishing with 13 catches for 132 touchdowns and a pair of TDs to highlight Thursday’s victory. Knowing the scrutiny he has been under, what did that performance tell you about the kind of player he is and the kind of person he is?

Cobb: Davante’s very hungry. You can see it. This isn’t something new for us as players. We see this kind of play from him in practice, and I’m glad that everybody’s finally getting an opportunity to see it. He faced some injuries over the course of last season, and you could tell he never quite recovered from it, the way he moved. It’s great to see him healthy and what he can do when he’s healthy. This is nothing new for me. This is what I expect to see from Davante, and I’m excited for him to finally go out and make those plays.

The Packers are just the second team since 1970 to have three players – you, Adams and Montgomery – with at least 10 receptions in the same game. The three of you combined for 34 catches, 293 yards and three TDs in the win. So, which of the three was bragging the most afterward?

Cobb: (Chuckling) None of us. I think we were all pointing the finger at each other because that’s the type of guy that you’ve got in that locker room, and that’s the type of guys that we have on our offense. We don’t care who makes the play. We just want the play to get made and for guys to take advantage of the opportunities that they have. We all tried to do that (against the Bears), and we try to do that each week. The biggest thing we talked about this week was the focus and execution. And we came out with the focus, and we were able to execute for the most part. I left a couple (of touchdown catches) out there on the table I wish I could have made. But that’s the way it goes.
