Report: Knile Davis has short stay with Jets

GREEN BAY - Things can change fast in the NFL, but usually players have longer stints with a team than running back Knile Davis reportedly has had with the New York Jets.

The Jets claimed Davis on waivers a day after the Green Bay Packers released him, according to a tweet from agent Ian Greengross. A couple hours later, Davis once again is headed toward being a free agent.

The Jets plan to release Davis, according to a report from NFL Network, because they finalized a deal with free-agent tailback C.J. Spiller.

Here is what Greengross tweeted earlier Tuesday:

"Congrats to @GBRB_30 (need to change the handle again) on getting claimed by the @nyjets!" Greengross tweeted Tuesday afternoon. "When I come to see you we'll hit the @carnegiedeli"

The Packers traded a conditional late-round pick to acquire Davis from the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 18. They are not expected to be on the hook for the pick after releasing Davis after just two games.

In two games, Davis played only 13 snaps with the Packers. He had two carries for 1 yard on Oct. 20 against the Chicago Bears, and three carries for 4 yards Sunday at Atlanta. Davis also caught two passes for 4 yards against the Falcons.

Davis was the first player Packers general manager Ted Thompson traded for during a season since safety Anthony Smith in 2010.

The Packers are still thin at running back. They had used a patchwork attack that included receiver Ty Montgomery, former practice-squad member Don Jackson and fullback Aaron Ripkowski after starter Eddie Lacy was placed on injured reserve, and chief backup James Starks had knee surgery earlier this month.

Now, it is unclear whether Montgomery can play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. He was inactive against the Falcons because of an illness he later said was related to a sickle-cell trait. If Montgomery can't play, the Packers could use receiver Davante Adams in his hybrid role. Adams played several snaps in the backfield against the Falcons.

"He’s like the backup, backup, backup, backup running back/wide receiver in the backfield," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Sunday. "All those guys are interchangeable at one, two and three (positions) in the strong and weak formations."

Also Tuesday, the Chiefs released inside linebacker Sam Barrington, a seventh-round draft pick by the Packers in 2013. Barrington played his first three seasons with the Packers before being released at the end of training camp.
