GREEN BAY – Linebacker Clay Matthews returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis, and now coach Mike McCarthy will wait and see whether he can make it through an entire week without a setback.
The last time Matthews returned to practice with his current hamstring injury he suffered a setback two days before the Indianapolis Colts game. He has not played since, raising his number of consecutive missed games to three and overall games missed to four.
Matthews took part in the walkthrough with the defense and then individual drills afterward. He did not appear to be limited during the portion of practice open to the media.
But Matthews was limited in team drills and how much he’s able to do in that regard, along with how he responds to it Thursday, will go a long way in determining if he’ll be back for Washington on Sunday night.
Missing from practice was running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery, who was sidelined by a slight stomach bug. The illness is unrelated to the one that sidelined him against the Atlanta Falcons and is not serious.
Tight end Jared Cook was practicing again and McCarthy indicated earlier Monday morning that he has advanced enough to do more than run routes with the scout team. In fact, Cook was a full participant in practice and made solid progress toward returning from a high ankle sprain that sidelined him the last six games.
“That’s kind of what we’re looking to see this week from practice,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. “Obviously he’s a big body, very athletic, has the ability to get down the seam and has a little bit more speed when he’s in there. But we’re going to have to get back on the same page and get that chemistry back where it was before the injury.”
Guard T.J. Lang (ankle) and linebacker Jake Ryan (ankle) were not in attendance. However, left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee), who was knocked out of the Titans game, was back on the practice field and taking part in drills. He was listed as a limited participant.
Cornerback Damarious Randall (groin surgery) was in uniform but stood on the sideline during the walk-through.
Wide receiver Randall Cobb (hamstring), defensive back Micah Hyde (shoulder) and cornerback Quinten Rollins (groin) were limited participants.
Center JC Tretter (knee) remains out.
