Adams feels for former Fresno teammate Carr

GREEN BAY – Wearing a Fresno State stocking cap with a picture of himself in a Bulldogs uniform posted inside his locker, Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams was thinking Thursday about his college quarterback.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had surgery Tuesday on his broken leg, ending what had been a breakout season. Back in Fresno, Calif., Adams was Carr’s go-to receiver for two seasons. Both players were second-round draft picks in 2014.

Adams said he saw Carr’s injury against the Indianapolis Colts once — and only once — on a television highlights package. The injury “looked pretty bad,” he said. A day after surgery, Adams spoke with Carr on Wednesday.

“Surgery went great,” Adams said, “but it definitely was a devastating thing that happened to somebody who didn’t deserve it. He’s staying pretty strong about it.”

Carr garnered MVP consideration after leading the Raiders to a 12-3 record with one game to play in his third season. He completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 3,933 yards, 28 touchdowns and six interceptions with a 96.7 passer rating.

In Green Bay, Adams also has enjoyed a breakout season. The third-year receiver has a career-high 69 catches for 966 yards and 10 touchdowns, ranking second on the Packers in all three categories.

Adams and Carr have stayed in touch through the beginning of their NFL careers. They had a special connection at Fresno State, with Adams catching 131 passes for 1,719 yards and 24 touchdowns as a third-year sophomore.

Adams said how Carr responded to surgery did not surprise him.

“He’s pretty up about it,” Adams said. “Better than I would be if that happened to me. That’s the type of guy he is. He wants to make sure he keeps everybody – he’s strong, so he’ll keep everybody else strong by not allowing them to get down about it, because he’s not.”
