Packers investing more in tight ends

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers paid $5.625 million in salary-cap dollars to upgrade their tight end position with Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks.

Six months from now they will have a better idea of how well their money was spent, but from both a salary and salary-cap standpoint, they may have gotten a bargain.

Bennett’s deal already has been reported: three years, $21 million, a $6.3 million signing bonus and a 2017 cap number of $3.85 million.

Now Kendricks’ deal is in and it is similarly reasonable.

Kendricks signed a two-year, $4 million deal that includes a $1.2 million signing bonus, according to a source with access to NFL Players Association salary data.

Kendricks will earn base salaries of $800,000 in ’17 and $1.25 million in ’18, weekly roster bonuses totaling $600,000 both years and $75,000 workout bonuses both years. His first-year salary cap number is $1.775 million and his second-year cap number is $2.325 million.

Throw in returning tight end Richard Rodgers ($1,923,504) and the Packers have $7,548,504 in salary-cap dollars committed to their top three tight ends.

Last year, they had $4,095,049 committed to Jared Cook, Rodgers and Justin Perillo.

Peppers' deal: After making $8 million with the Packers last season, linebacker Julius Peppers took a significant pay cut to play with the Carolina Panthers.

The one-year deal Peppers accepted is worth $3.5 million and includes a $1.65 million signing bonus.

He has a base salary of $1 million, weekly roster bonus worth a total of $600,000 and a $250,000 workout bonus. There are also $250,000 in likely to be earned incentives. His cap number is $3.75 million.

The Packers are roughly $24 million under the $167 million salary cap after signing cornerback Davon House.
