McCarthy: Adams 'cashed in' on opportunities

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers are conducting their second organized team activities session that's open to the public, and coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media Thursday morning.

Here's a summary of what McCarthy had to say:

(On the first week of practice) "We had a good week, worked last week. And really what we’re doing is we’re pushing through these installations and making sure that rookies have everything before they leave at the end of minicamp. We’re pushing forward. We have another different install today, and so far so good. Yesterday’s practice wasn’t the best practice of the four, but we’ll improve today. I think after the five-day layoff we were a little rusty in certain areas."

(On Davante Adams' growth) "I think he’d be the first to tell you that the injuries that he fought through in Year 2, he was definitely much healthier in Year 3. A complete understanding of all the positions, obviously an advancement in the route running and the time-clock coordinating between him and Aaron Rodgers was definitely much better last year. Frankly, I thought we did a much better job creating opportunities for him last year not only as the No. 1 receiver but also as the No. 2 and No. 3 hole as far as formation and alignment. So increased opportunities, he cashed in on it. I thought Davante had a heck of a year last year."

(On depth at outside linebacker) "Feel good about the depth at outside linebacker. We’re operating at a 90-man roster and that’s really what I look for big-picture wise, is you want the most competitive 90-man roster as you possibly can because competition makes your football team better; we know that, whether it’s Phase III of OTAs or training camp, the outside linebacker position this is probably as good of depth as we’ve had there in some time. I think you’ll really see some of our guys jump out in training camp as we get the pads on."

(On backup lineman Don Barclay) "I mean Don Barclay has so many excellent attributes. You look at someone who can play all five positions and has played tackle, guard and center in our system, so his versatility, his work ethic, he’s a great locker room guy. Most importantly he’s from Pittsburgh. That goes a long way around here."
