Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery (88) has the ball stripped from his hands by Philadelphia Eagles middle linebacker Jordan Hicks (58) Thursday, August 10, 2017, at Lambeau Field.

GREEN BAY - Fumbles tend to be glaring mistakes, and when opportunities are meager those mistakes are amplified.

Such was the case for Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery, who played the first quarter of Thursday’s exhibition game against the Philadelphia Eagles and fumbled on his second carry. Montgomery broke through the line of scrimmage with the ball in his left hand, and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox pawed it loose.

The Eagles recovered deep in Green Bay territory but failed to turn the drive into points. Nonetheless, Montgomery’s fumble was an important bullet point for a player in his first full season at running back.

“Just tried to do something and thought I was getting past the first wave and I wasn’t already past it,” Montgomery said. “Just need to put two hands on the ball sooner. … One thing about me, I don’t know if you know this, but I don’t usually make the same mistake twice. So I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Montgomery’s workload was light. He and the starting offensive line were on the field for three drives totaling 11 snaps. Montgomery carried three times for zero total yards.

“It felt real good,” Montgomery said. “Obviously didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities, but limited opportunities. I’ve got some stuff to work on.”

Much of that work can be accomplished in practice, and Montgomery does not believe he needs significant reps in the remaining exhibition games.

“If it happens, it happens,” Montgomery said of getting more carries. “But it’s not something I feel I need to do. Why put that wear and tear on your body if you don’t need to?”
