A strong safety out of West Liberty State, Mark Murphy was an unhearaldel 10th round draft pick in 1980. He went on to establish himself as a consistent leader in the Packers defensive secondary for eleven seasons. (1980-85, 1987-91). He sat out the 1986 season with a stress fracture of the left foot.

Murphy ranks among the Packers career leaders in several defensive categories, including career tackles (926) and career unassisted tackles (687). In 1988 he led the defense in three major categories: unassisted tackles (86) interceptions (5) and fumble recoveries (4). He was voted Packer “Rookie of the Year” by Wisconsin Sports media in 1981 after replacing an injured Johnnie Gray in the starting defensive lineup.
