Davante Adams must clear concussion protocol by Saturday to play vs. Cowboys

GREEN BAY – Davante Adams remained in the concussion protocol Friday morning after practicing twice this week, but Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy did not rule him out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

McCarthy said the team should know definitively by Saturday afternoon whether Adams can play.

“When you deal with the doctors and availability and scheduling,” McCarthy said, “with it being an away game, I would say tomorrow by the time we get on the plane would be a fair deadline.”

McCarthy said Adams continues to make progress returning from a vicious hit from Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan last week. One day after being on the field in a non-padded practice, Adams participated in the Packers' padded practice Thursday, a sign he had no ill effects returning to physical activity.

Earlier this week, a source told PackersNews.com the Packers receiver had a good chance of playing against the Cowboys.

Adams was listed as questionable on the injury report Friday (the Packers' didn't practice, so all listings are an estimation).

Adams wasn’t the only player returning from injury on the practice field this week. Only inside linebacker Joe Thomas (knee) got no practice reps and he was listed as being out for Sunday's game.

Starting tackles David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga were listed as questionable Friday.

“I’m happy with the progress that we’ve made health-wise,” McCarthy said Friday. “We’re getting better. Energy was good. So it’s getting ready to go.”

Running back Ty Montgomery had limited participation in Thursday’s practice. Montgomery worked in the indoor portion of practice, McCarthy said, and did not participate in team periods.

Although Montgomery has said he expects to play Sunday despite broken ribs, he was listed as doubtful on the injury report Friday.

Offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett, a former Packers running back, said he played with broken ribs early in his career. So he knows the challenge ahead for Montgomery, if he's available Sunday.

"Just the game we play in itself," Bennett said, "when you have an injury of that sort, and you’re dealing with contact, it makes it difficult. Just the game itself."
