Long snapper Brett Goode back for another stint with Packers

GREEN BAY – The revolving door at long snapper swung back Tuesday to the player who had anchored the position with the Green Bay Packers for nine seasons before a hamstring injury derailed his season.

Veteran Brett Goode was re-signed after undergoing a medical check on his injured hamstring. Replacement long snapper Derek Hart was released.

Goode injured the hamstring in the Week 3 game against Cincinnati and was put on injured reserve. The Packers signed Taybor Pepper to replace him and worked out an injury settlement with Goode that allowed him to become a free agent.

The two sides agreed on a four-week settlement, which meant the Packers couldn’t re-sign him until three weeks after that period expired. Goode is healthy and has been working out, his agent, Kevin Gold, said several weeks ago.

Hart was signed after Pepper injured his ankle in practice and was put on injured reserve. Hart struggled with a few of his snaps, including one on a Mason Crosby field-goal attempt against Detroit that bounced off the ground. That kick was blocked.

Crosby also missed a field-goal attempt Sunday against Chicago when holder Justin Vogel dropped the snap.

"I feel bad for Mason, because it’s not a problem until it’s a problem," special teams coordinator Ron Zook said. "Then it’s a big problem. It’s just consistency. Consistency, consistency, consistency. You can’t buy experience. If you can buy it, I’d spend all my money on it. It’s just something we’ve got to keep working on, and we’re getting better, we’re making progress. We’ve just got to keep doing it."

Goode has been almost flawless over his tenure and while he won’t provide the same level of speed and athleticism on punt coverage, his presence is likely to greatly improve the mechanics of the kicking game.

NOTE: The NFL confirmed that kickoff for Green Bay’s game Nov. 26 at Pittsburgh will remain at 7:30 p.m.

There had been speculation that the league might want to flex a Packers team missing injured quarterback Aaron Rodgers out of the Sunday night prime-time spot in favor of the New Orleans’ Saints game against the Los Angeles Rams, which features two first-place teams. That game was flexed from Fox to CBS and will be the featured doubleheader game at 3:30 p.m.
