Packers boost depth at center with Dillon Day signing

GREEN BAY - For the first time this season, the Green Bay Packers have a player who’s a center by trade to back up starter Corey Linsley.

The Packers announced Wednesday they signed center Dillon Day off the Denver Broncos' practice squad. Day, a 6-4, 296-pound lineman, is a first-year player out of Mississippi State who signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in May 2015. He spent his first two seasons, and the first six weeks of this season, on the Broncos' practice squad.

"I heard it was going to happen for a while and it finally happened," Day said. "I'm happy to be here. Very excited." 

Day said his agent told him the Packers began having interest in him at the start of this season, probably while scouting him when he was in Broncos training camp. The Packers didn't have a true backup center at the time, but instead of claiming Day when he was cut, they wound up going with Justin McCray and Lucas Patrick as backups.

Day was promoted to the active roster in Denver for Week 7 this season. After being released Oct. 24, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts released Day on Nov. 7, and Day signed to the Broncos' practice squad a day later.

The Packers haven’t had to address depth at their center position because Linsley has started all 14 games. Linsley and right guard Jahri Evans are the only players on the Packers' offense to play every snap this season.

Day said his primary position has been center, but that he has played some guard.

"Nothing was really said," Day said of what the Packers want out of him. "My first two years in the league in the preseason I played more guard. This year I was primarily a center."
