Wisconsin's Troy Fumagalli 'having fun' at Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. - If Allen Lazard of Iowa State has become the favorite wide receiver for quarterbacks of the North team at the Senior Bowl, then Troy Fumagalli of Wisconsin is their preferred target at tight end.

Fumagalli, who measured 6-4⅞ and weighed 247 pounds, has been impressive through three days of practice, hoping to catch the attention of NFL personnel men in attendance.

“It’s fun to be back out here playing with these guys, playing with the best of the best,” Fumagalli said. “It’s truly an honor to wear the ‘W’ one last time. … Just another opportunity to compete and show everybody why I deserve to be out here.”

Though there are other talented tight ends in Mobile — with Mike Gesicki of Penn State chief among them — Fumagalli’s route running, body control and strong hands have stood out alongside his peers.

On Wednesday, Fumagalli made a leaping catch down the middle of the field after adjusting beautifully to an underthrown ball. He reached over the helmet of a linebacker in coverage and snagged the pass for a big gain.  

On Thursday, Fumagalli quickly disengaged from Penn State safety Marcus Allen in the one-on-one drill to make a one-handed catch along the goal line. His ability to separate from defenders has been important, especially given his lack of top-end speed.

“It’s really (about) details,” Fumagalli said. “It’s really, you know, making sure you get on top of people, you’re working leverage, good hands. There’s a ton of stuff that goes into it.

“I’m comfortable, I’m loose, just having fun with it. I’m always playing my best ball when I’m having fun and relaxing, so that’s just what I’m trying to do out here.”
