Janis impresses in 1st padded practice

Rookie receiver Jeff Janis knows how to make a quick impression.

Taking part in his first padded practice of training camp, the seventh-round draft pick brought in a diving one-handed catch from Tolzien in the back left corner of the end zone during a red-zone period. It came over the coverage of starting cornerback Sam Shields.

McCarthy said the team will wait to see how Janis feels over the next two days before deciding whether he'll play against the Titans. Janis says he'll be ready.

"The biggest thing for me is making plays when they come my way," Janis said. "If I can show that, then I can get confidence in the coaches and in the quarterbacks, and hopefully when they put me out there that they can trust me to make the play."

MATTHEWS ON THUMB

Outside linebacker Clay Matthews nearly intercepted Flynn during one red-zone period with the ball shooting through his hands for an incompletion.

Matthews said it didn't have anything to do with his surgically repaired thumb, but more just getting back into football mode. The first step will be against the Titans.

"I've been very critical of myself watching film as far as really looking at if the hand's an issue," Matthews said. "I can definitely say that it's coming along tremendously. Obviously, I'm getting more and more comfortable each and every single day. As I continue to say, it's still not 100 percent but it's getting close."
