Rodgers doesn't expect to play much Saturday

Like recent years, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers probably won't see much action in Saturday night's preseason opener in Tennessee and he's OK with that.

Rodgers played sparingly last season. He was 3-of-5 passes for 62 yards in opener against Arizona, saw his most action the following week against St. Louis and wound up sitting out of the finale completely.

There's plenty to sort out behind Rodgers, too. Veteran Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien continue to battle it out for the No. 2 job and rookie Chase Rettig has been receiving more team snaps over the last two days.

After missing seven games last season with a broken collarbone, it's not necessarily a bad thing to be smart during the exhibition season so long as Rodgers gets enough work in to be ready for next month's regular-season opener in Seattle.

Rodgers, entering his 10th NFL season and seventh as a starter, is well aware of what he needs.

"I would say it's probably going to be fairly light, if I were guessing," Rodgers said. "I know they want to get Matt and Scott extended looks and also Chase — give Chase some action, too. It just depends on how much Mike (McCarthy) wants me to go, whether that's a series or two or a quarter. Whatever it is, I'll be ready."

Receiver Jordy Nelson didn't do much during Wednesday's practice, but McCarthy said he and his coaching staff haven't made any determinations yet on who will play and how many reps they'll receive.

The one thing McCarthy is certain about is he wants to get as many rookies and first-year players involved as possible. Fifty-four players on the team's 90-man roster have one year or less of NFL experience.

"You want all your young guys to play," McCarthy said. "I'm not interested in getting on the plane coming back home and we didn't have a young player that got in the game. I'm looking for every young, new player that has come through our doors has an opportunity to show what he's got."
